From the granite cliffs of Lake Temagami and the sandy shores of Lake Nipissing to the beautiful Almaguin Highlands, Ontario’s Near North is the ultimate outdoor four season vacation destination.

Stream Fishing

It’s a beautiful corner of Ontario where you can paddle the historic Mattawa and Sturgeon Rivers, tracing the same route used by Voyageurs a long time ago. It’s an area rich in heritage where you can visit places like the Magnetawan River where steamboats played a major role in building this region.


Fishing until day's end

No matter what season you visit there’s always plenty to see and do. We are home to 6 provincial parks including the world renowned Algonquin Provincial Park. Our region is famous for its incredible angling. There are literally hundreds of lakes in the area which are home to over 10 species of sports fish.

Explore our Discovery Routes, an extensive network of four season trails with an incredible variety of outdoor fun spanning the entire region.

Every winter we welcome snowmobilers who enjoy the thousands of Snowmobile trails are everywherekilometers of  groomed Near North Trails and our special brand of northern hospitality. This region is also a great location for winter camping, back country skiing, dog sledding, and icefishing. 

In the heart of the beautiful Almaguin Highlands, lie award winning maple syrup producers. This area has been producing maple syrup and sugar since pioneer times.  Maple syrup, maple butter, a variety of homemade sugar and candy are available year round.

Wildlife photography is particularly rewarding in the Near North. A short hike along a forest trail is almost guaranteed to produce an opportunity to Don't forget to bring your cameraview a denizen of the deep forest in your lens and record the experience for future enjoyment. Moose, grouse, loon, beaver, squirrel, chipmunks and rabbits abound in the area and often provide the raw material for great outdoor photos.

Opportunities for wilderness canoe tripping in the Near North cannot be matched anywhere else in Ontario. The large Canoeingnetwork of rivers and lakes establishes the region as Canada’s largest inter-connecting canoe route system. From casual day outings to extended remote tripping, there are routes to suit every scope of paddler. 

The renowned waterways of the Wolf and Pickerel Rivers; the historic “Champlain Trail” along the Mattawa and French Rivers; and the rugged Temagami wilderness have by their beauty and tranquility, enticed adventuresome paddlers for decades.

In the fall, a large number of tourist operators in the area offer hunting and fishing package plans. Grouse, duck, deer, bear and moose can be hunted in the area.

Our region is small and intimate in size, you can be in the heart of the wilderness while at the same time only minutes away from most Peaceful Fly Fishingurban amenities. Visit our many museums, enjoy spectacular scenery, spend quality time at a secluded cottage or take in some world-class fishing on countless lakes, rivers and streams.
